For its couture debut, the conceptual Chinese brand Wuyong, designed by Ma Ke, opted for something that looked more like performance theater than fashion, transforming one alley of the city’s Palais Royal gardens into a fashion production chain straight out of rural China. The line went from boxes of cotton seed, greedily picked by Parisian pigeons, to weavers and dyers, and on and on until the final product, modeled by a group of tai chi dancers. The result, made up of naturally dyed and hand-woven pieces resembling functional garb worn by ancestral Chinese peasants, worked as a moment of far-flung fashion poetry.

Terence Spillane, 52
Terence Spillane, director of global media relations at Cushman & Wakefield, died of a heart attack Thursday. He was 52.

Spillane joined Cushman & Wakefield in 1989, when the real estate firm was known only in the U.S., and helped establish the company as a global brand that now operates 221 offices in 58 countries.

“For two decades, Terry was the face of Cushman & Wakefield to the world, managing strategic media relationships across America and internationally,” Bruce Mosler, chief executive officer of Cushman & Wakefield, wrote in a letter to employees.

“As the firm grew, he continued to serve as international liaison for corporate communications in New York. He contributed immensely to the firm’s reputation as a market and thought leader. More important than any story idea was the integrity and trustworthiness Terry communicated every day.

“Though known affectionately as ‘Bulldog’ for his persistence and professional success, those who had the chance to work with him loved him for his personal warmth, sense of fair play and gentleness of spirit….Terry loved Cushman & Wakefield — almost as much as he loved New York and the Yankees.”

Before joining Cushman & Wakefield, Spillane was a senior account executive in the media relations department at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Before that, he was assistant commissioner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, one of the Division 1 conferences that make up the National Collegiate Athletic Association, where he helped get the league off the ground in its infancy. Earlier, he was assistant publicity director at Yonkers Raceway and a sports reporter for the New York Post.

Spillane was a member of the alumni board of Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, and their two daughters, Carolyn and Kate. A funeral mass was held Monday.

Other Voices
Not all the interesting fashion action in Paris was couture or came from traditional houses. At Maison Martin Margiela, for instance, clothes were handmade out of old vinyl records or press clippings, while at Boudicca, visible perfume played a role.

Maison Martin Margiela: Finding variations on his beloved recycling theme must be an amusing pastime for Martin Margiela. The secretive Belgian’s latest collection of so-called “artisanal” pieces of handmade garments was long on fun and games, with a dress assembled of old vinyl records and a jacket of shredded press clippings about the designer spanning the last 20 years. Anything can be appropriated into Margiela’s quirky world. A plastic bag, for instance, lined with silk taffeta, became the bodice of a dress, while an evening suit on a wire hanger was strapped around a model. If that sounds like a lot of hot air, how about 30 balloons inflated and twisted together into a jacket? It may prove tricky to sell, but Margiela knows his commercial gambits, too. In November he will launch a line of fine jewelry in collaboration with Italy’s Damiani.

Cathy Pill: Young Belgian designer Cathy Pill crashed the couture calendar with feminine draped dresses in rich color effects. Prints are one of her strong suits, and she worked an artsy graffiti motif that conveyed downtown cool. Though the collection was only a part of the larger ready-to-wear collection she will present in Paris this fall, it packed enough punch to underscore the fact that Pill, 27, is a talent to watch.

Boudicca: Though it wasn’t exactly couture either, Brian Kirkby and Zowie Broach, the designers of the British label Boudicca, gave a small presentation of confections. Broach said that they wanted to explore the idea of transparency (think juxtaposed layers of translucent lace and cotton) as a counterpoint to their first fragrance, Wode. It’s packaged in a graffiti can, is billed as a visible perfume and comes out blue before turning transparent. In fact, many of the dresses had invisible prints that appeared only when the fragrance was applied.

New Pattern at Pucci
Emilio Pucci is apparently looking for a successor to Matthew Williamson, as the designer focuses more on growing his own business. The London-based Williamson assumed the role of creative director at Pucci, a division of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, three years ago, taking over from Christian Lacroix. Pucci is said to have approached some design assistants about succeeding Williamson.

Matthew Williamson’s first U.S. flagship is set to launch early next year in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. The 2,500-square-foot space will be the designer’s second in the world, joining his five-year-old store on London’s Bruton Street. Williamson started his own company in 1997 and his label is sold through 170 wholesale accounts.

Last summer, TSM Capital acquired an equity stake in Matthew Williamson Holdings Ltd. in collaboration with the Aronsson Group, spearheaded by Jeffry Aronsson, former chief executive officer at Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta. The Baugur Group, which invested in the company in 2006, maintains a significant equity interest in the business, and Williamson and ceoretain a majority stake.

J.LO’S RUSSIAN VISIT: Jennifer Lopez was in Moscow last month to perform at the Muse TV awards, but she didn’t leave before paying a visit to her JLO by Jennifer Lopez store at the Crocus City Mall, just outside the city. This was Lopez’s first visit to the store since it opened in 2004.

“I was so impressed with the entire mall, and the boutique looks fantastic,” she said after leaving the store. “It’s exciting to see the JLO lifestyle all come to life in such a great environment.”

Meanwhile, Sweetface Fashion Co., the parent company for the JLO by Jennifer Lopez brand, plans to open more stores in new territories through next year. Stores are pegged for Europe, the Middle East and in South America. This will add to the 30 stores the firm already operates in Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the Ukraine and Greece.

TAM HEADS HOME: Contemporary designer Vivienne Tam is planning to expand in China with the opening of 150 stores within the next five years. The stores, which will house Tam’s full range of apparel, will be unveiled throughout the country with the help of Ports Design Ltd., an apparel design and manufacturing company with operations based in China and Hong Kong.

“[Ports Design Ltd. knows] the regional markets inside and out,” Tam said. “I’m confident that, together, we will be able to bring innovative designs to the modern Chinese woman.”

Alfred Chan, chief executive officer at Ports, added, “[Tam] is one of the first Chinese designers to establish herself internationally, and I am pleased that we will have the opportunity to work with her to further establish her brand in the Chinese market.”

Tam does business with more than 150 high-end specialty and department stores nationally. She also sells to more than 100 stores globally, including 23 shop-in-shops in Japan. In addition, Tam operates freestanding stores in major cities including Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore and New York. Ports Design is the parent company of the fashion firm Ports 1961.

LIQUORED UP: Grey Goose branded vodka has commissioned designer Rachel Roy to create a cocktail dress to be worn by the brand’s spokesmodels at select Grey Goose-sponsored events nationwide. The black-and-dark blue dress will launch at Roy’s fashion presentation during New York Fashion Week in September, where models dressed in Roy’s design will serve drinks. Grey Goose is the official title sponsor of Roy’s spring show and, afterward, the partnership will extend into sponsored trunk shows.

The cocktail dress is made of a stretch wool with a draped neckline and a cascade of fabric on the back to create a look of fluidity. Roy said she was inspired by Grey Goose’s heritage to create a modern twist on a classic black dress.

Last month, Jones Apparel Group acquired a 50 percent stake in Rachel Roy, creating a three-way venture between Rachel Roy, Jones and TSM Capital, which acquired a significant minority stake in the brand in November.

BETSEY GETS BLAIR: Rebecca Blair has joined Betsey Johnson as senior vice president of merchandising. Blair will lead the merchandising direction for all divisions within the contemporary sportswear house, including apparel, accessories and footwear. She will work closely with the design, retail, wholesale and licensing teams to facilitate growth and elevate brand image. Blair joins the firm from John Varvatos, where she had been president for a year. Prior to that, Blair was at the Liz Claiborne-owned Juicy Couture, where she spent three years as vice president, general manager of merchandising and sales. Her experience also includes posts at the Gucci Group, Chanel, Prada and Tse. Blair reports to company co-founder Chantal Bacon.

MOM’S FIRST DRESS: Boston-based designer Daniela Corte hopes to replace boxy, bleach-scented hospital gowns with Dar-a-luz (which means “to give birth” in Spanish), a medically approved yet stylish birthing dress.

“You’re taking the first photos as a family and you’re in bed wearing this huge [muumuu] with fabric like sandpaper while everybody is snapping pictures,” said Corte.

Made of a stretch, organic cotton jersey, the knee-length dress opens in the back via a series of ties. Soft, twisted straps, an Empire waist and wrap-front décolletage give it a touch of fashion and also allow for breast-feeding.

In consultation with her obstetrician, Corte road tested the garment with the births of her two children, three-year-old daughter Natasha and infant son Lucas. The dress comes in a drawstring bag, which Corte envisions doubling as a grab-and-go labor kit. The dress wholesales for $44 and comes in steel blue or violet. Read more..
