Sleep With Me [1994]
Customer Review: A superbly acted expose of flawed modern romance.
Directed by relative unknown Rory Kelly, this film is a surprisingly fresh take on an old theme. With fine performances from Craig Sheffer, Meg Tilly and the always watchable Eric Stoltz in the lead roles, and with well casted supporting cast, the film explores the nature of modern romantic experience, and the intricate ideological patterns that have arisen thanks to changes in the dating game.

Ideological may seem an odd word to use, but the film does support itself ready for deeper analysis, though the intelligence of both script and direction is hidden under an layer of comedy that simply adds to the overall watchability of the picture.

While not a massive hit, the film enjoyed cult popularity, and I think its enduring success is largely thanks to the honesty with which it analyses its subject matter. Witty, intelligent, watchable and wise, this film is a must see for any aspiring script writer, not to mention critic.

Oh, and of course Tarantino’s cameo analysis of Top Gun is of course worth watching in and of itself!
